Overview

Seasoned accounting professional with 12 to 18 years of progressive experience in civil construction accounting. Responsible for leading project accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls across multiple heavy-civil projects and business units. This role partners with project managers, operations, and executive leadership to ensure accurate job costing, timely financial close, strong cash flow management, and compliance with contract and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Project Accounting and Job Costing Maintain detailed job cost ledgers; ensure accurate allocation of labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor costs, and overhead to projects.
• Revenue Recognition and Billing Prepare progress billings, retainage schedules, and revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP and contract terms.
• Change Orders and Contract Management Track, analyze, and record change orders, claims, and contract modifications; reconcile contract balances.
• Month-End and Year-End Close Lead month-end close for construction entities, prepare consolidated and project-level financial statements, and support annual audit and tax processes.
• Cash Flow and Forecasting — Produce cash flow forecasts, monitor collections, manage bonding and surety requirements, and support bank covenant reporting.
• Internal Controls and Compliance — Design, document, and enforce internal controls; ensure compliance with company policies, grant/contract requirements, and regulatory standards.
• Systems and Process Improvement — Lead ERP and accounting system implementations or upgrades; optimize workflows for efficiency and accuracy.
• Leadership and Mentoring — Supervise and mentor accounting staff; provide training on construction accounting practices and systems.
• Stakeholder Communication — Present financial results and project performance to senior management; collaborate with project teams to resolve accounting issues.

Preferred candidate profile

• Experience — 12–18 years of accounting experience with focused on civil or heavy construction project accounting.
• Education — Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
• Certifications — CPA or CMA preferred; other relevant certifications considered an asset.
• Technical Skills — Strong working knowledge of construction accounting principles, job costing, revenue recognition, and GAAP. Proficient with construction ERP/accounting systems and Excel.
• Industry Knowledge — Demonstrated experience with progress billing, retainage, bonding/surety, change order accounting, and multi-state project accounting.
• Analytical Ability — Proven ability to analyze complex project financials, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions.
