Job Description
The Lab Assistant will support the daytoday operations of the Makerspace by maintaining equipment, preparing materials, ensuring safety compliance, and assisting teachers and students during projectbased learning sessions. This role is ideal for someone passionate about maker culture, enjoys working with diverse technologies (3D printing, electronics, robotics), and thrives in a collaborative educational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lab Preparation & Maintenance
Set up workstations with required tools, components, and consumables before each class or workshop
Conduct routine checks on equipment (3D printers, laser cutters, soldering stations, Arduino/Raspberry Pi kits) to ensure proper functioning
Clean, organize, and restock the lab; manage inventory of materials (filaments, electronic components, craft supplies)
Technical Support
Assist teachers and students with operating maker equipment and softwares.
Troubleshoot basic hardware/software issues.
Conduct periodic calibration and minor repairs (e.g., nozzle cleaning, belt adjustments on 3D printers)
Safety & Compliance
Enforce lab safety protocols (PPE usage, proper handling of power tools and chemicals)
Conduct safety briefings for new students and visitors
Keep emergency supplies (firstaid kits, fire extinguishers) stocked and accessible
Administrative Duties
Maintain accurate logs of equipment usage, maintenance schedules, and inventory levels
Prepare requisitions for consumables and new equipment based on forecasted needs
Assist in budgeting and costtracking for lab resources
Student & Faculty Support
Provide handson guidance during projectbased modules and maker activities
Demonstrate maker techniques (laser cutting design, basic soldering, circuit assembly) to small groups
Facilitate troubleshooting sessions and encourage safe experimentation
Qualifications & Skills
Education:
Diploma or Bachelors degree in Science, Engineering, Technology, or a related field. Certifications in electronics, robotics, or CAD/CAM are a plus.
Technical Proficiency:(Preferable)
Handson experience with maker technologies: 3D printing, CNC/laser cutting, microcontrollers (Arduino/Raspberry Pi), basic woodworking and metalworking tools
Familiarity with softwares and programming environments
Soft Skills:
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with a serviceoriented mindset
Patience and adaptability to work with students of varying ages and skill levels
Experience: (Preferable)
Minimum 1–2 years of practical experience in a school, makerspace, workshop, or lab environment
Prior involvement in projectbased learning or extracurricular STEM initiatives preferred
